"Okay, but what do these stickers have to do with your upcoming 30th birthday on September 24th, just 16 short days away?"
So thrilled you asked.Â
As I move forward in my symbolic journey that is The Shedding of My 20's, it's hitting me once again that the lessons of life come to us in the sneakiest of ways. The shaping of this woman has never been in dramatic, lightening strike moments of epiphany. It's been in the slight direction shifts of 1º to the left or the right that lead to the massive Sliding Door adjustments of life. The sinking sting of minor disappointment, a particularly resonant sentence in a mediocre book, innocuous failure, the witnessing of ups and downs of the lives around you... tiny shapings, jostling against a sand paper life.
A chapter of my 20's that was FULL of these tiny lessons was my first iteration of Home Ec: A business model (or lack thereof) comprised of mostly classes my heart wasn't really invested in teaching and mostly compromises that I both did and didn't realize I was making. All leading me to a business who's trajectory was unfamiliar and sounded exhausting. While the "You've got to start somewhere" school of thought is valid and important (and arguably, completely meaningless because literally everyone does, in fact, start somewhere) it often skips right past the importance of a slow reveal and the fostering of slow growth. In the years since starting Home Ec, stopping Home Ec and then starting her back up again in a brand new attitude, what I want is: More fun. Less money.Â
Allow me to explain. Â
Our obsession as a culture is with side hustles turned Fortune 500s, billion dollar overnight successes and genius wunderkinds. Those are the sexiest stories to tell and the most fun to hear about on a podcast. 'If at first you don't succeed, try, try again' doesn't sell copies of Forbes (as if anything actually does these days). But what I find myself wanting out of this next chapter of Home Ec is less planning, more experimenting. Less melting down and molding, more dreaming and trying.
More 'Why not?'
Starting with stickers. Truly so dumb! But I wanted one that said "Read more" after spending a year inside and reading the tallest stack of books opened up my world more than I could have ever predicted. So I decided to make those stickers! Why not!? And then the obvious followed; if we're reading more, why not sewing and cooking... and walking too! Why. Not.
These are the tenants of the new Home Ec. The why not. The trying and seeing. The trying and failing. The small shapings that lead us to better versions of ourselves.
So, yeah. Stickers.
Tell me you're on board because it will be way more fun if we all do this together.Â
