The Scrap Bin: The End of October
The Scrap Bin
End of October
Ok, so truth be told, October worked me.
I moved. I started a new job. Home Ec got put on the back burner along with working out, grocery shopping or taking care of myself. All I felt like doing was avoiding all of the hurdles. And so that's what I did. I was staring at this big ol mountain ahead and it was hard to imagine taking any steps towards it. Because base camp felt good and safe and that mountain looked really hard to climb.
The non metaphor version of what I'm actually saying:
I took lots of naps.
I watched a lot of Succession (and you should too).
I cancelled two workshops -- two workshops that I didn’t really promote super well in the first place because the idea of having to prepare them them and then have people show up with sparkly eyes, money spent, ready to learn just was about 10 extra things on my to do list that I couldn’t handle. And I felt really, really shameful about all of that. Does Home Ec even exist? Am I even a small business owner? If I back away really, really slowly, will people even notice that I've left?
Browsing General Store in Paso Robles (thanks for the rec, Sebo's!) on an aptly timed family vacation, I cracked open a little, bright green book of ~iNsPiR@Ti0nAl~ quotes by Cheryl Strayed.
The first quote I saw:
"We all get stuck in place on occasion. We all move backwards sometimes. Every day we must make the decision to move in the direction of our intentions. Forward is the direction of real life."
Woof. So, I'm not the first person in the world to feel this? Taking a big bite of a dream, briefly think you're choking and then starting to realize that it might take a while to chew it. Ok. Good to know, good to know. A lesson I'm learning over and over again: Give it time. Sure enough, it took about two more weeks of tectonic plates settling into their new place to feel like me again. Guys, sleep is amazing. So is a well stocked fridge. I even went on one (!) very slow, very gaspy run. Plus a lot of grace and patience and grace and patience. And throwing away the final cardboard box in my apartment. That also felt really good too.
Anyway. Have you ever heard of November? I hear it's a pretty good time and a good chance to start over with new perspectives and intentions. So, here's the new plan:
1. Lots of fun new workshops.
2. But also, taking a few steps back to make sure I'm moving Home Ec in the direction that I want it to go and not just the direction I think it should.
3. Letting go of should.
4. A lot of hard work.
5. More Succession. It's really good.
Are we in? Are we still here? Feeling good? How are you?! (Do you know you can reply to these emails? You can. Tell me how you are.)

Next On Our Makes List:
Adding to Our Stash: I'm in the market for some wide wale corduroy for a decorative lumbar pillow I need on my bed. Will probably have to order a few swatches to make sure the color is right, but I'm thinking something like this amber color from Stonemountain. Maybe a little too orange?
Watching This: Succession. Succession. Succession. And before you ask, I'd love to say that I'm a Shiv, but I think I have to be honest with myself and say I'm Kendall. Yikes.
Oh! Also, episode 2 of Modern Love on Amazon. Which is based on the podcast. Which is based on the article. Which is based on people's real life love stories. None of that really matters. Just know, episode 2 stars a very attractive, Hugh Grant-ish, iconically tressled Dev Patel.
"Dawn is for bakers and lovers."
K. BYE. DONE.
Listening to This: Something about Fall always makes me want to listen exclusively to Laura Marling. Semper Femina when I get up in the morning. Every day.
Last Thing: Loving Making Perfect from Bon App. Yes, the episodes are between 45mins-1 hour. The trailer is 6 minutes, for heavens sake! My friends, it's fine. Get on board. This is appointment TV, people.
